Short Sermons #16: THE SPIRITUAL THIRST & HOW TO QUENCH IT [A deep inner ache or longing for meaning, peace, and a connection with God]

"Jesus answered her, 'If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.'" - John 4 Verse 10 (NIV)

You need to think seriously about Jesus' statement.

Ask him for living water, eternal life, not natural water!

What people generally refer to as thirst is, in fact, not the true thirst. 

Physical thirst is not real thirst; it actually is a shadow of the real thirst. The body thirsts, yes, but that points to a more profound kind of thirst.

When the spirit thirsts, that's real thirst, and one would never be at rest until and unless they get the real water to quench the thirst!

Imagine this: It's a hot sunny day. You are in a desert. You have walked in the sun for hours. You are dying for water.

Now imagine if you were to have the same desire for the spiritual water that you have for natural water under the desert sun!

For example, some people think their lives will be fulfilled the moment they become rich.

On the other hand, there are many 'filthy' rich people who still feel empty, unfulfilled, in spite of all the riches they have.

There also are people with just enough income to meet their basic needs, yet they live truly fulfilled lives!

The difference comes from the kind of thirst that one has and the kind of water that one takes to quench the thirst.

According to Kathryn Kuhlman, before one receives salvation, they have a God-shaped vacuum in their spirit. This vacuum will not go away unless God occupies it. One cannot fill the vacuum with any other substance!

It is this kind of emptiness that results in people getting into depression or into taking drugs, even into taking their own lives. Such people feel hopeless; they feel as if life is devoid of purpose. It's the God-shaped vacuum yelling!

So, thirst for the living water! Seek the living water and live by it!

Listen to this, "Jesus answered, 'Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life'" - John 4:13-14 (NIV). Glory to God!

Philip found Nathanael and told him,  “ We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law , and about whom the prophets also wrote - Jesus of Nazareth , the son of Joseph . ” “ Nazareth ! I remember the time when I was still a teenager. I kept grudges; real grudges, I mean. I did not know how to forgive ; neither did I have the willingness to do so. If somebody did me wrong, they were supposed to pay for it! I was a stranger to God back then - I had never experienced the transforming power of the Holy Spirit in my life. Any talk about God actually had a jarring effect to my ears; it still does to some folks. I also would tremble in anger, sometimes to the point of shedding tears - even against an elder! I recall a day I got so angry at an elder that he almost fell off the chair on which he was sitting. The elder was evidently wrong; I could not tolerate it anymore - but seething in anger did not make me right either - it's only that I did not know at the time and actually felt justified in my actions. Short Sermons #111: I AM NOT THE CHRIST [Giving Him all the glory]

"He ( John ) himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light." John 1  Verse  8 [NIV] I think we are in some kind of problem as the body of Christ . The problem, in my view, is that an increasing numbe r of men and women, even teens and senior citizens are, whether by word or deed, trying to take the place of Christ. Haven't you ever come across church denominations in which congregants seem to, or actually, worship the leader ? That's idolatry !
